Who should get tested for HPV, the main cause of cervical cancer?
According to the latest updated recommendations of the American Cancer Society (ACS, 2020).
1. All women aged 25 years and over should undergo HPV testing or Co-testing every 5 years or Cervical cytology every 3 years.
2. Suspect that something abnormal has occurred, such as bleeding from the vagina for an unknown reason, obviously vaginal discharge that may contain blood, frequent urination or pain and swelling, inability to urinate, pain in the lower abdomen, etc.
3. People over 65 years of age who have been screened regularly for the past 10 years with normal test results and no risk factors should discontinue cervical cancer screening.
4. People who have undergone a total hysterectomy should stop screening. Unless the hysterectomy is to treat cervical cancer or pre-cancerous cancer.
5. People who have had a hysterectomy without removing the cervix and who have been vaccinated against HPV should be screened for cervical cancer according to normal guidelines.
6. The most important thing is to get tested regularly, no matter how you get tested.
