Things to Know About the Package Understanding HPV Virus 

The Human papilloma virus (HPV) has more than 100 strains. About 40 strains cause disease, the most well-known being strains 16 and 18, which cause cervical and anal cancer, and strains 6 and 11, which cause genital warts. Currently, there is no cure, but it can be prevented with the HPV vaccine. HPV vaccines can prevent infection by about 70%. There are two types :

1. Bivalent HPV vaccine (Cervarix): Protects against HPV strains 16 and 18, which cause cervical cancer.
2. Quadrivalent HPV vaccine (Gardasil): Protects against HPV strains 6 and 11, which cause genital warts, and strains 16 and 18, which cause cervical cancer. However, a new HPV vaccine with high efficacy is now available: the 9-strain HPV vaccine. When should you get the 9-strain HPV vaccine? The HPV vaccine is most effective when administered before the first sexual encounter. It is given intramuscularly in the upper arm. It can be administered to women aged 9-45 years and men aged 9-26 years, but can begin as early as age 9 (9-14 years). For this age group, only two doses are needed, providing the equivalent effectiveness to three doses. Ages 9-14: Two doses 
First dose: As scheduled. 
Second dose: 6-12 months after the first dose. Possible Side Effects: Possible side effects are usually mild and include pain, swelling, and redness at the injection site, fever, fatigue, headache, nausea, vomiting, and rash. These are temporary and resolve on their own. Severe side effects, such as Guillain-Barre syndrome, are very rare and there is no confirmed evidence that the vaccine causes this condition.
