This was my 3rd booking with Pela. I returned because I really enjoyed my first visit. Unfortunately, this most recent experience was very disappointing and honestly a bit traumatizing. My partner and I previously tried the 6-in-1 massage and liked it enough that we decided to book a 120-minute Thai Fusion massage for deeper pain relief. My partner had a good experience with his therapist. However, my therapist (younger, clear-frame glasses — I unfortunately don’t remember her name) was not at the same standard. The massage began with me lying prone. The massage table setup was uncomfortable — the face cradle was placed on top of the table, raising my head while my body stayed flat, and there was no bolster. This is poor positioning, especially for a 2-hour session. The room was cold despite multiple AC adjustments. The oil felt heavy and grainy, which felt uncomfortable compared to silky and lighter textured oil. Although the therapist was polite, the technique raised safety concerns. She her forearm to press repeatedly over my spine, causing extreme discomfort. I provided feedback during the session; while it improved slightly, it continued intermittently. The pressure was not appropriately adjusted for body structure. I weigh 115 lbs and do not have heavy musculature. Massage pressure should vary by tissue depth — deeper pressure on thicker muscle and minimal to no direct pressure on bony structures. However, strong compressions were applied directly on my spine and it pushed my ribs against the table. I was unable to relax and remained braced for most of the 2-hour session, and I left with soreness rather than relief. When I turned over, she stood at the side of the table and completely lifted the towel. Although she tried to shield me, my body was still exposed to my partner and his therapist, which was very uncomfortable and embarrassing. During arm work, she pressed very hard on the medial arm, causing numbness and radiating nerve pain. I left the massage exhausted from bracing and with soreness in my spine rather than relief. I may return but will request a different therapist. I also strongly recommend additional training for proper client positioning, draping, and pressure control. Using a table with a proper face-cradle extension and providing a bolster would significantly improve client safety and comfort.
