Pneumococcal vaccine Severe and invasive infections caused by the pneumococcal bacterium Streptococcus pneumoniae can lead to bloodstream infections, meningitis, severe pneumonia, and even disability and death. Pneumococcus causes respiratory tract infections such as otitis media, sinusitis, and pneumonia, and can cause severe invasive infections such as meningitis, bone and joint infections, and bloodstream infections, which are a common cause of death in the elderly. The elderly are at a higher risk of developing invasive pneumococcal infections than younger people. Therefore, receiving this vaccine is beneficial in reducing the severity of the disease. Currently, there are three types of pneumococcal vaccines for the elderly, covering different strains: 13-strain conjugate vaccine (PCV13) covering bacteria... 13 pneumococcal strains that cause most diseases. 15-strain conjugate vaccine (PCV15) covers 15 pneumococcal strains, protecting against bloodstream infections and severe pneumococcal meningitis. 23-strain polysaccharide vaccine (PPSV-23) covers 23 pneumococcal strains that cause severe diseases, including drug-resistant strains. Recommendation: Suitable for individuals aged 65 years and older, immunocompromised individuals, and patients with chronic diseases.
