About This Service
Thalassemia is an autosomal recessive blood disorder caused by a genetic abnormality resulting from a mutation in a globin gene that controls the production of globin chains, a key component of hemoglobin in red blood cells. This causes red blood cells to have a shorter lifespan than normal, leading to anemia. Consequently, various organs in the body receive less oxygen than they should. These genes are inherited from both the father and the mother. The abnormality can manifest in several ways, including reduced globin production or the production of abnormal globin chains. The severity depends on the type and number of abnormal genes.
