Understanding the Urinary System
The urinary system consists of several organs that work together to produce and expel urine from the body. Urine is produced in the kidneys, flows through the ureters into the bladder, and is then expelled from the body through the urethra. The main organs of the urinary system include:

Kidneys: Fist-sized organs located in the abdominal cavity on either side of the lumbar spine. Their primary functions include filtering waste from the blood, reabsorbing useful substances, maintaining fluid balance, producing hormones to regulate blood pressure, and producing red blood cells, among others. Urine produced in the kidneys flows through the ureters via the renal pelvis.
Ureters: Thin, muscular tubes connecting the two kidneys to carry urine from the kidneys to the bladder.
Bladder: An organ for temporarily storing urine before it is expelled from the body through the urethra.
Urethra: A tube connecting the bladder that serves as a passageway for urine from the bladder to the body. The male urethra is longer than that of the female and is not separate from the genitals; therefore, the urinary system is often related to and encompasses the male reproductive system as well.
Symptoms of Urinary Tract Diseases
Most urinary tract diseases often have common initial symptoms that can be observed, including:

Back pain or pain in the side of the body.
Pain during urination. Symptoms of urinary tract infection include: painful urination, urinary incontinence, incomplete emptying of the bladder, abnormally low urine volume, blood in the urine (brown, pink, or cloudy white), and an unusual odor in the urine.
