What is a Skin Prick Test? It's a test where allergy solutions are dropped onto the skin (usually the forearm or back), and a small needle is gently used to prick the skin, allowing the solution to penetrate. If you are allergic to the substance, your body will release histamine, causing a raised, red, itchy rash. 1. Purpose of the Test: To identify which substances a patient is allergic to, such as dust mites, animal dander, pollen, mold, or various foods. It helps doctors plan targeted treatment, such as avoiding the allergens or allergy immunotherapy. 2. Who Should Be Tested, and At What Age? Age: Can be done from infancy, but in very young children, the test results may not be as clear as in older children or adults because their skin is not yet fully responsive. Generally, clear results are obtained from 12 months of age onwards. Target Group: Individuals with symptoms consistent with allergies, such as frequent sneezing, runny nose, itchy eyes, chronic rashes, or asthma. 3. Preparation and How to Stop Medication (Very Important!) To ensure accurate test results and prevent masking by medication effects... Patients need to discontinue certain medications in advance, as follows: Antihistamines: Must be discontinued for at least 5–7 days (e.g., Cetirizine, Loratadine, Fexofenadine). Topical steroids: Do not apply to the test area (forearm/back) for at least 2-3 days. Certain antacids: (H2-blockers such as Ranitidine) should be discontinued for 48 hours. Certain sedatives or anti-anxiety medications: (e.g., Amitriptyline) should be discontinued for 7-14 days (consult your doctor before discontinuing). General health: Patients should not have a fever or sudden illness on the day of the examination. 4. Examination Procedure Skin cleaning: The nurse will wipe the forearm or back with alcohol. Allergy solution application: Various allergen solutions are applied as dots, along with a control solution for comparison. Skin prick: A small needle is used to gently prick the epidermis. (Painless and no bleeding) Waiting for results: Please sit and wait for approximately 15–20 minutes. Reading results: The doctor will measure the size of the resulting red bump to determine the allergy result. 5. Contraindications and precautions for the examination: Severe skin diseases: The examination cannot be performed if there is a widespread rash or skin inflammation in the area to be examined. Severe allergic reaction (Anaphylaxis): Those with a history of severe allergic reactions leading to anaphylactic shock must be closely monitored by a physician. Pregnant women: Examination is generally avoided during pregnancy to prevent the risk of a severe allergic reaction. Those using beta-blockers for blood pressure control: This may make treatment more difficult in case of a severe allergic reaction.
